Matthew Craven – PRIMER – October 19 – November 4, 2018

Big Pictures Los Angeles is pleased to present PRIMER, an exhibition and book launch by LA based artist Matthew Craven. An opening reception will be held Friday, October 19th, 6:00pm-9:00pm. Open October 20th 12:00am-6:00pm.

Utilizing found images from textbooks along with his own geometric patterns, Matthew Craven’s collages and illustrations seek to create a new handmade universe, juxtaposing imagery from different cultures and time periods to celebrate commonalities. Photographs of archaeological remains and the natural world are overlaid on colorful tiled backgrounds drawn on the back of vintage movie posters, to create a hypnotic and mesmerizing vernacular of symbols and designs. Featuring an introduction by LACMA curator Leslie Jones, Primer, is the first publication of Craven’s art and a reconfiguration of traditional historical narratives inspired by obsessive formations.

Matthew Craven was born in Michigan. He earned a BFA from Michigan State University, and received his MFA from the School of Visual Arts, NY. He has exhibited widely in the United States and abroad, including solo and two-person exhibitions at David Shelton Gallery, Houston; DCKT Contemporary, NY; Allegra LaViola Gallery, NY; Marvelli Gallery, NY; Gallery Hijinks, San Francisco; Packing, Detroit; and Get This! Gallery, Atlanta.
